Digital Wallonia

Official partner of the Smart City Institute and powered by l’Agence du Numérique, Digital Wallonia is in line with the global digital strategy for Wallonia, carried out by the Walloon Government and the Walloon Minister for Economy and Digitalisation.

Both as a virtual and real-life platform, Digital Wallonia embodies the objective of the Walloon Government to enable Wallonia to excel in the domain of digitalization. The resulting Smart Region Vision aims to accompany the 262 Walloon municipalities in their smart initiatives and to support them in case of lack of resources (for example in the field of ‘Open data and big data). The main goals of the Walloon Smart Region Vision are to:

  • Mutualize the resources,
  • Ensure the coherence of the different initiatives via a virtual platform and a physical forum,
  • Create a beneficial regional climate for the development and deployment of smart city initiatives.

The Walloon Region

The Walloon Region has launched the Marshall plan 4.0 in 2015.  This plan aims at reviving the Walloon economy by focussing on different components such as a digitalisation plan to sustain innovation and digital transition, the enrolment of innovative smart mobility projects and the development of digital territorial intelligence, all with the help of smart technologies.

In the scope of the Marshall plan 4.0, the Walloon Region has appointed the Smart City Institute as the academic partner and has entrusted the Smart City Institute with a series of missions that are in line with the mission of Digital Wallonia, namely to turn Wallonia into a “Smart Region”.

The City of Liège

The city of Liège also supports the Smart City Institute by making its territory and databases available for use and experimentation. In march 2017, the city of Liège has launched the project “Réinventons Liège”, which is a platform that enables citizen participation and consultation and that has resulted in 900 project proposals up to now. The project also enables the organisation of workshops and meetings with international experts and local partners that are specialised in five different topics (energy, citizen participation, food, creativity and innovation and economy). The aim of these citizen workshops is to give specific examples of local and international projects to inspire and help citizens in different neighbourhoods to develop smart projects.
